How to decorate your holiday table this season

As most of you know by now, soy mexicana. With that said, Christmas, is a big deal for us, from the moment we set the table to how we dress. We dress up as if we were going to the met gala and the truth is we are simply having dinner in the same dining room we had dinner last night, in jeans and tennis shoes. It simply a tradition, and I have to admit, I love it!

Every time Hector and I have a gathering at our place, decorating the table is one of my favorite things to do. It was instilled in me at a young age, that setting the table with love and effort would make your visitors feel even more welcomed. I have been setting my table for years, but this year I decided to share some of my tips and treasures with all of you.

Decorating your holiday table doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, it doesn’t matter if you have a $50 dollar budget or $500, it’s how you spend it.

First things first, the table cloth. I love the rustic modern, Scandinavian vibe, if that even makes sense, so instead of using the typical white table cloth or not using one at all (don’t do this to your table!), I bought Scotch wrapping paper, taped the ends to the bottom of the table and viola! You have yourself a Pinterest-worthy tablecloth. It’s easy for cleaning purposes and I love the contrast on wooden tables.

Next up, the placemats. I bought these at Papersource, $23.95 for 50 paper placemats. The truth is, you will probably have these for a while since you usually host 6-10 people at a time and the décor possibilities are endless!

Which leads me to the next item, gold chargers. OK, here’s the things with chargers, every store sells them at all different prices. It’s knowing where to go to buy them. I bought mine last year after Christmas at Michaels for $1.99 a piece. I bought 10 in total and have used them countless times. A must if you are the entertainer type.

Next up, Fine china. Let’s see here, Fine china, can go both ways, depending on the occasion. If you have fine china, and hardly ever use it, then take advantage and use it. I was lucky enough to receive it as wedding presents and I absolutely adore this gold design by Vera Wang. So chic, timeless and elegant.

Remember, if you don’t have fine china, don’t stress! Last year, Hector and I hosted our Christmas party at our apartment and I obviously didn’t use my fine china. My friends would have been using them as freebies by the end of the night! So I opted for cute disposable plates and silverware, which nowadays there are so many chic options!

After spending some time on Pinterest, I finally came up with a quick, easy and beautiful way to decorate the centerpiece of the table. I went to my local Christmas tree seller and bought some fresh garland. Since I love adding a lot of candles to give it a more comfy vibe, the garland is usually too big. So, let say your table is 6 inches long, do not buy 6 inches! Buy half or a little more than half. Once you get home, go out to your balcony or patio and trim the garland, keeping the pieces you trim aside, you can then use these strands as cute napkin holders.

I finished the look with two mason jars filled with peonies, a handful of pine cones and candles, lots, and lots of candles! Home goods and Ikea are my best friends when it comes to decorating my centerpieces.

As for the rest of the house, adding Christmas accents here and there never hurt nobody haha!

Every city Hector and I visit, we try to buy an ornament. That way, every year as we set our Christmas tree, it gives us an excuse to talk and laugh about our travel memories together.
