My Birth Story

This little warrior just turned six months. Can you believe it? Where has the time gone? If you have been following me since he was born, then you know we got off to a rough start and I have to admit that when he was born, I wasn’t physically or emotionally ready to share his story, but I am now. So let’s get started.

A couple days before I went into labor, I had “contractions.” Once the real contractions kicked in, I knew those had only been Braxton hicks. On Monday, July 10th I woke up at 6:30 am with cramps, like when you get your period. It actually felt weird to feel cramps after nine months of not getting my period. As they got closer together, I realized that maybe these cramps I was feeling were actually contractions. Around 7:30 am I downloaded an app and started counting them. I started getting them 10 minutes apart, but I wasn’t too alarmed yet. I was excited to think that maybe this was it! I mean I was 4 days past my due date so we were expecting it at any moment.

By 11 am, I was getting contractions every 6 minutes and that is when I decided to call my OBGYN. She advised me to take a shower, eat something and then go visit her to make sure I was actually in labor. I did as I was told, took a shower, ate a bagel with avocado and egg whites, packed the hospital bag in car and headed to her office. By the time I got to her office, I was 3 cm dilated and fully effaced. She told me to go walk around and head to the hospital! As we were leaving her office, the contractions started getting closer together and stronger. When I arrived to the hospital, they had me wait in a room as they monitored the baby and my contractions to make sure they were 3 mins apart. By that point, I was in so much pain, or so I thought! The nurse checked me again and noticed that I was still 3 cm dilated so she told me to take a couple laps and walk around. After 30 minutes of walking around the second floor of the hospital, I was getting contractions every 3 minutes, 1-minute long. By that point, I was crying of how much pain I was in.

The nurse checked me again and finally admitted me! I guess they didn’t have any rooms available so that is why they made me go walk laps in the first place. By the time I made it to the labor room, I was crying hysterically asking for the epidural! I was already 5 cm dilated!!! Fifteen minutes went by and the anesthesiologist came in and gave me a heavy dose of epidural. In a matter of minutes, I was able to talk again, laugh and enjoy my family. Everyone was there, waiting for #BabyBlank (yes, he didn’t have a name yet). Meanwhile, Hector was totally making fun of me. He now explains that I was flying high with the epidural lol. He says he will never forget the faces I was making. Shortly after, the doctor came in and broke my water. Then the nurse would come in and check me every 2 hours and lucky for me, I was dilating fairly quickly.

I was scared that the epidural would slow it down and they would have to use pitocin but they never had to induce me. By 8:30 pm, I was about 8 cm dilated when I started to get a fever. The nurse wasn’t too worried, but they gave me some Tylenol to control it. By 10:30 pm, I was 9 cm dilated and still with a fever. At that point, the nurse warned us that the baby would have to spend 48 hours in the NICU for observations since I was with a fever. I was so sad, but Hector tried to keep me calm and focused. By 12:30 am, I was 10 cm dilated and ready to start pushing! I was ready to get this baby out!!

I pushed for one and a half hours when the nurse called the doctor! We were about to meet our baby boy!!! By that point, Baby Enzo was under a lot of distress and the doctor told me that she was going to need to use the vacuum to get him out, or else we were going to have to go to an emergency c-section. I was so nervous for my baby that I remember pushing two more times and all of a sudden, Baby Enzo (Baby Blank at the time) was on my chest crying hysterically. I will NEVER forget that moment. I will never forget that blissful moment when he looked up at me, crying and I looked at him and cried as well. It was everything I imagined and more. It was the calm before the storm because only God knew what was in store for us after those blissful seconds. I write this with tears coming down my face, because only HE knows why he put that situation in our path.

Seconds after seeing my baby for the first time, they took him away from me. All I remember was the nurse telling me he wasn’t as pink as they wanted him to be. Hector was observing the nurses as I was getting stitched up (yes I tore!) I remember asking Hector, 10 toes and 10 fingers? Hector laughed and said yes. Shortly after they took Enzo to the NICU and Hector went with him. It wasn’t until he was admitted to the NICU when they noticed there was something much more serious going on with Baby Enzo.

Hector was texting me from the NICU as I was in my post labor room with the worst shivers from the shock, epidural withdrawals and fear of not knowing what was wrong with my baby. I remember crying nonstop and my dad just hugging me trying to keep me warm.  I don’t even know what time it was by that point, but it wasn’t until 6:30 am when I was able to go down to the NICU to see my baby. He was intubated and all hooked up, a situation I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. NO mother wants to ever see her baby like that. I wasn’t able to hold him, I just kissed him and whispered we would be together again soon, with tears on my face. Shortly after they transferred him to another hospital.

This is where his NICU journey starts. I promise to share that story with you soon. As always thank you all for your unconditional support. We love you guys!

Thank you for sharing Your story with us. It made me think of my experience when I was told they had to do an emergency c-section at 32 weeks pregnant. I had preeclampsia and my blood pressure was uncontrollable at that point. Baby James was born May 8th and spent thirty days in the NICU and I cried every night on my way home because I couldn’t take him with me. James is my second baby, I went through the same experience with my first baby (John) only he wasn’t lucky enough and only lived for three days. Now I have a wonderful, healthy baby boy whom I love with all of my heart. I enjoy all of your insta stories of you and baby Enzo, he is beautiful ♥️

Thank you for sharing your story, I had a similar experience with my 2 year old. I am almost 6 months pregnant with me second and I just pray that God will take care of him and that we won’t have to relive our first experience again! You are a strong momma!!!

I remember these days when you did not post and make us all worry about you and Enzo.I also had to do a c-section with my baby urgently. I know that the doctors’ aim is to save children. But I think they still don’t know how to give the feeling of safety and peace to a woman in labor and not to go against Mother-Nature. After my delivery I read a lot and started to share the views of Michel Odent. Looking forward for another part of a story!
