Scent is a powerful thing.
Thank you Johnson & Johnson for sponsoring this post.
Isn’t it crazy how certain fragrances or scents can remind us of specific memories? There are still some smells or random fragrances that spark a memory for me. A lot of the smells of baby products I use for Enzo, especially from Johnson’s®, remind me of my childhood! I love that the brand has recently changed their ingredients and that their products are 100% gentle. I am glad they were able to keep their iconic scent because it brings back so many memories and hopefully will for Enzo too! Research has shown that certain scents can have benefits for your baby like mother-baby bonding, induce calm and even improving a baby’s alertness. Here are more ways that scent can help boost your baby’s development!
1. It can help enhance your baby’s sensory development
Smells have direct access to the part of the brain that store memories that is why scent can evoke such strong emotions. Strong memory-scent associations are developed through repetition. That is why having a routine that involves bath time is so important. The bath is a multisensorial experience, where all the senses come into play and contribute to a healthy development.
2. Scent can help you bond with your baby
Did you know that babies can recognize their mothers on scent alone?! Of all the senses, smell creates the most bonding between babies and their parents. According to research at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, babies who were exposed to a scented product had lower stress levels, which was associated with more positive engagement with their parents post-bath. Sometimes, I even like to massage Enzo with some scented lotion like Johnson’s New CottonTouch, before putting him to sleep. The fragrance really soothes Enzo and I love how he smells and feels after I put the lotion on him.
3. Scent can help encourage sleep
If you are a parent, then you have probably tried almost everything to get your baby to fall asleep. I have come to learn, and it has also been proven in studies, that having a daily night-time routine can help significantly. The first step is bath time. Research shows that a soothing scent during bath time can help the child wind down and get ready for sleep. Like I mentioned, we like to give Enzo a massage with some lotion or oil to soothe and relax him. And then of course, hopefully get him calm enough to rock him to sleep.
