If you are not using serums, you are behind on your skin care.
I would say that the absolute essential basics in any good skin care routine are a good cleanser, toner, eye cream, moisturizer, SPF, and serums! Each of these has a different function. So what are serums and why are they important? Serums are basically a super potent and concentrated formulation of ingredients that address a specific skin care need. There are different serums for different things, depending on what issue you want to address.
The beneficial ingredients found in serums like antioxidants, peptides, vitamins, minerals etc., are extremely concentrated, and at a much higher percentage. For example, cleansers and moisturizers usually contain between 5 and 10% active ingredient, whereas serums can contain up to 70%. So, whether you’re looking to even tone, reduce fine lines, brighten, firm or get rid of dark spots, serums are the way to go!
When should you start using serums? The younger the better! To have young looking skin when you get older, you need to take care of it when you are young. Obvious right? Effective skin care is all about consistency. Of course, it’s never too late to start! What really convinced me of how powerful serums and proper skin care can be is when I met the woman who does my HydraFacials. I could have sworn she was in her late twenties. Turns out she has a twenty-something year old daughter. She’s never had botox or anything like that. Just facials and most of all, serums she says!
*Tip: Remember, after you wash your face and use your toner, the first thing that goes on your skin are serums. You want to make sure the serum get absorbed directly by your skin. After, you can put on moisturizer and any other creams.
Here are some of the serums I am currently using!
100% Pure Organic Rose Water Calming Serum
It’s cruelty free, gluten free, organic. I love anything with rose water. It’s great for sensitive skin and it hydrates and plumps your skin. Deeply soothing, nutrient-dense that nourishes sensitive skin.
Skin Inc Serum-Infused Night Oil
I love this brand! They have countless serums for all kinds of things. This one is serum and an oil in one, that is designed to work double-time on your skin while you sleep. Has a lot of antioxidants (always look for this!) Helps your skin heal while you sleep and wake up glowing, hydrated and healthy.
Lancome Advanced Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate
A good anti-aging serum is necessary. This is a fast-acting anti-aging serum that reveals smoother, more radiant skin. It helps with fine lines, dullness and uneven texture.
L’Elixir Des Glaciers Serum Majestueux Vos Yeux Eye Lifting Serum
This one is for your eyes and yes, on the pricier side but it’s really good. It has a lifting effect, dramatically reduces the appearance of wrinkles and droopy eye lids. It increases firmness and helps your eyes look younger and more rested.
Sunday Riley C.E.O Rapid Flash Brightening Serum
This is highly-potent serum infused with 15 percent THD ascorbate (vitamin C) to fight the look of dullness, dark spots, and discolorations, while instantly increasing brightness, radiance, and luminosity. Vitamin C is also great for anti-aging in general. I use this one specifically for my melasma which I got during my pregnancy. I am always looking for serums that help with discoloration and evening out my skin tone.
Osmosis Catalyst AC-11
I’ve shared these Osmosis products I am using on Instagram before. Basically anything from the brand is amazing. They are truly high quality products worth the price. If you only want to get one serum, this is the one I would choose. This formula features amino acids and vitamin C to increase collagen production. As a result, wrinkles appear less severe and the overall elasticity and tone of your complexion is improved. This even helps me to not break out when I get my period and got rid of those little annoying tiny bumps on my forehead. Really recommend this one.
Osmosis Replenish Antioxidant Repair Serum
This is an anti-aging serum that also prevents free radical damage. It’s a great one to put on for during the day as it helps with blocking damaging UVA and UVB rays. Floral extracts nourish your palette while lactic acid resurfaces your appearance. Skin is left with a luminous healthy glow.
Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum
I love this brand in general. This serum helps brighten, firm and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has a lot of Vitamin C which helps with all of this.
Retrouve Nutrient Face Serum
This is definitely the most expensive skin care product I have ever owned. I recently started using it so I will let you know if it’s worth it. It has anti-inflammatory and epidermal stem cell activating properties that promotes the healing of sensitive and damaged skin. A high concentration of Vitamin C works to brighten and repair the skin, while Ambiaty Extract promotes the activation of collagen synthesis—a process that firms and smoothes the skin, improving its suppleness, radiance and overall condition.
Oh, I definitely need to start using serums! They’re so effective! 🙂

Good to know!! Would love to add serums to my routine
Definitely worth the read, I am just getting into skin care routines and they have been life changing. Thanks for giving us this very informative post Paola! 🙂 PS. Enzo is the cutest
I’ve been trying to take better care of my skin lately but skincare is expensive. I’m constantly trying to find a serum that my skin actually loves and doesn’t have an allergic reaction to it. That is very difficult but investing in skincare is a must. If I want my makeup to look good then I have to work on my skin first.

Paola! I’m so glad you put this out! I’ve been waiting for a long time about your blog on serums! I love your blog, trust your opinions, and your skin is always so beautiful. Also, my mom uses the Lancôme one and it so does wonders. She uses the silver one though (also from the genifique line) and quick tip: it works wonders for depuffing her undereyes. Anyway, hope you’re having fun in Paris! Envoyer des salutations from a Mexican-American living in San Antonio TX. Besos para Enzo!
