Of course being 100% green is impossible, but starting with some easy green-er habits is a great way to start. Even if you only commit to one thing from this list, you’ll be making a difference. Here are a few easy ways you can be more green in your everyday life!

IN YOUR CLOSET

When it comes to being green, your closet isn’t usually the first place you think of, but it’s a great place to begin. There are so many simple things you can do to have a more sustainable closet.

  1. Extend the life of your clothing. This means finding ways to give your clothes a second life, whether that’s donating, selling or recycling your textiles! Every year I like to have my closet sale so that my clothes can have a second home and so that someone else can get more use of them.
  2. Shop vintage. Buying secondhand fashion is probably the most sustainable way to shop because it involves no new energy, resources or labor to create the item. Some of my favorite vintage stores are What Goes Around Comes Around, The Real Real and Tradesy.
  3. Shop sustainable and ethical brands. I definitely think it’s important to look for brands that produce ethical clothing, are cruelty free and that use sustainable materials. Some of my favorites are Stella McCartney, Simon Miller, Everlane, Reformation and Allbirds.
Algunas de mis tiendas vintage favoritas son What Goes Around Comes Around, The Real Real and Tradesy.

IN YOUR KITCHEN

Going green in the the kitchen is actually pretty easy and inexpensive. If you commit to a lot of these tips, you’ll save more money in the long run and reduce the amount of plastic you use in the kitchen.

  1. Bring your own grocery bags. We all have them, but we are all guilty of forgetting to bring our reusable bags when we go to the grocery store. Remember, all those bag fees add up! Another great idea is to get reusable produce bags so you don’t use a million of those plastic bags in the store.
  2. Ditch the plastic. Replace plastic bags with reusable food storage bags and plastic water bottles with a reusable bottle.
  3. Shop local and organic. I love going to the farmer’s market on Sunday for organic, locally grown produce. Your fruits and veggies sometimes travel over 1,500 miles to get to your grocery store, meaning lots of resources and air pollutants. When you buy seasonally and locally, you cut down on pollution and help local growers!

IN YOUR HOME

We spend the most amount of time in our homes. Making greener choices can be as simple as turning off the lights when you aren’t using them and unplugging electronics while you’re sleeping. Here are some other tips that are easy enough to add to your daily routine.

  1. Switch to natural household products. Traditional cleaning products like Clorox and bleach are bad for your eyes, airways and skin. They also pollute the air and our streams. Make the switch to natural cleaning products and never sacrifice health for a “clean” home. Some of my favorite natural household brands are Mrs. Meyer’s, Honest and Seventh Generation.
  2. Switch to energy saving light bulbs. Though CFL (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) are a bit more expensive, they last 10 times longer than regular light bulbs and use 75% less energy.
  3. Go paperless. If you’re still getting bills in the mail, now is the time to enroll in paperless billing. You’ll save a bunch of trees just by choosing to receive any bills via email!
