The good news is, it’s finally hot and you’ve probably got a beach vacation coming up. The bad news is, the late summer heatwave is not our friend when it comes to wearing makeup. If you notice your makeup tends to slide off, melt away, crease or look cakey, you’re probably not wearing the right makeup for the hot weather. Luckily, with the right makeup products you can actually keep your makeup where it belongs–on your face! Here are the hot weather-friendly, sweat-proof makeup tips and products I use for keeping my makeup fresh no matter how hot it is.
ALWAYS USE A PRIMER
If you want to keep your makeup in place all day, the number one thing you’re going to need is a really good primer. The job of a primer is to not only give your makeup something to hold on to, but to extend the life of your foundation and keep shine in check. One of my favorites is the Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer or the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Primer. After finishing your skincare routine, apply a lightweight primer and smooth it into your skin. Wait a few minutes before continuing with your makeup.
AVOID HEAVY FOUNDATIONS
One of the worst things about wearing makeup in the heat is watching your makeup crease throughout the day. The good thing is you can prevent your makeup from creasing, melting or moving by simply… wearing LESS makeup. A heavy foundation loves to move around in the heat and shows immediate signs of streaking when you’re out in the heat for too long. Instead choose a lightweight, water-based tinted moisturizer for more natural looking coverage.
SWITCH TO CREAM PRODUCTS
In case you missed my last beauty post, I talk a lot about my favorite cream makeup products for summer. On hot days or on beach vacations, I like to use more creams instead of powders because they don’t cake or feel heavy. Cream blushes, bronzers and highlighters are also super easy to use and look way more natural.
GO FOR A WATERPROOF MASCARA
If you know you’re going to be sweating or by the pool or beach, a waterproof mascara is a must. It really is the only way to guarantee you won’t get smudgy raccoon eyes when you start to sweat or jump out of the pool. One of my favorite affordable ones is the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise in the waterproof version.
FINISH WITH A SETTING SPRAY
The final step for makeup that can last all day or night in the heat is to use a setting spray. The Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is probably the best one for really keeping your makeup put. It’s also good to bring the mini version with you for a midday spritz!
PACK SOME BLOTTING PAPERS
It’s always smart to be extra prepared. Blotting papers are great to bring along with you in your purse to eliminate shine and absorb sweat. They’re also great because you can use them without ruining your makeup unlike a standard tissue would!
